Synchrotron will be used to develop test for DFTD

A CSIRO press release provides insights on how Dr Jeff Church plans to use the synchrotron to attempt to develop a test for devil facial tumour disease.

The logic is based on recent Australian research showing disease related changes in human hair composition. If a similar effect is observed in devils resulting from DFTD infection, this could prove a vital step in making quarantine strategies more efficient.

However there is still a question mark over the prospect of a field test kit - if a test becomes viable, the time required and risk involved in shipping devil samples to Victoria might make the process prohibitive.

We congratulate Dr Church on his dedication and efforts to further the prospect of a field test kit for DFTD!
