Cedric the Tasmanian devil immune to DFTD

Why wasn't Cedric bred?

In yesterday's Newswatch item which reported on Cedric's being injected with live DFTD cells, I posed the question: why risk injecting Cedric with live tumour cells instead of first putting him into the breeding program?

I put this question and others to Associate Professor of Immunology, Greg Woods who was gracious enough to provide the following responses...

Question: How did you make the decision to perform the injection [of live DFTD cells] rather than entering Cedric into a breeding program?

Answer: Good question as we debated this - but I am confident that he won't develop the tumour. If tumour does develop, then his immune response is not protective, hence breeding from Cedric wouldn't help.

Question: Alternatively, has he already been successfully bred prior to the injection?

Answer: We plan to breed from Cedric to determine which genes are inherited - i.e. Will all his offspring also produce an immune response to the tumour?
