Remote cameras being used in Tasmania to track DFTD-infected devils
In what seems like a long-overdue step (to me at least), remote cameras are now being used in the fight against devil facial tumour disease in Tasmania.
Jeff La Valette has developed a motion-capture system which takes video footage of wildlife as it moves past the camera. The system then automatically broadcasts the footage via radio signal to a base station which records it. The base station is web-enabled allowing researchers to connect to it from anywhere in the world in order to review the captured footage.
Something Wild wildlife park owner Ray Green says the system should free up funds and time for researchers, allowing these to be channeled into other research efforts. In addition, the system will help to better target trapping programs and also provide data about the numbers of devils passing by traps without being caught.
