Mainland research project on devil cousins - spotted tailed quolls

The University of Queensland has partnered with Brisbane City Council and the Department of Defence in a bid to maintain biodiversity in the Brisbane area.

The team hopes to radio-collar spotted-tailed quolls, the mainland's largest marsupial carnivore (discounting possible devils!) as well as monitor footprints and scats, investigate community reports, deploy remote infrared cameras and utilise hair tunnels.

The smaller Eastern quoll is likely extinct on the mainland, and the spotted-tailed quoll is now locally extinct in former distribution areas.

We love to hear about projects like this getting off the ground and wish the team every success.

At Mainland Devils we hope also to investigate scats and footprints; we are deploying remote cameras, investigating the possibility of deploying hair tunnels and will respond to all community reports - but for the spotted-tailed quoll's larger cousin - the Tasmanian devil.

With some luck, we - or UQ - may yet capture an Eastern quoll on camera too :)
